藝術史跟史學之間的關係究竟是什麼？我們可以透過歷史知識為門徑，走入有助藝術創作的世界嗎？視覺圖像就是視覺史料嗎？對視覺作品的解析一定得依靠白紙黑字證據嗎？這些是歷史學與藝術史在進行跨領域對談時經常會遇到的問題。建築史學者Bruce Allsopp 曾說：
「If any justification were needed for the study of architectural history it could be that the evidence for many other forms of historical study is incomplete without the study of architectural evidence at a comparable level of scholarship.」 當然，這句話反過來說亦然。
這門課不打算簡化地看上述的問題，但希望透過學養豐富學者的著作帶領學生思考：藝術史與史學之間的對話可以怎樣進行？可能會遇到哪些問題？如何尋找更有建設性意義的方式讓這兩門學科之間可以互相啟發？互相增益？跨領域的研究如何進行？
本課程分成上下兩個學期開設。介紹歐美著名的藝術史與史學跨領域研究學術著作與期刊論文（如The Journal of Interdisciplinary History）。
上學期的課程分為三大主題：(1) methodological explorations, (2) the portrait, (3) the artist.
